6th Annual Monsoon Mayhem Surf Challenge Leads Off 2012 ASC Season at Desaru Beach in Malaysia from January 6-8

6th Annual Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge Leads Off 2012 ASC Season at Desaru Beach in Malaysia from January 6-8

30 December 2011, Kuta-Bali:  The 6th annual Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge will lead off the 2012 Asian Surfing Championship season at Desaru Beach in Malaysia from 6-8 January 2012, with professional and amateur surfers from Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Australia, and Taiwan already signed up to compete for the over $6,000 SGD in cash, prizes, ASC championship points, and just to have lots of fun at this unique event.

Located just east of Johor Baru in Malaysia and the closest surfing beach to Singapore, Desaru Beach is a white sand strip of beachbreak that can offer up peaceful glassy conditions as well as maniacally thumping closeouts during the monsoon season, so what will be on offer each year is anybody's guess.  Last year started with small and fun 2-3 foot waves and ended in an endurance testing 4-5 foot duckdiving marathon for the finals, Mother Nature playing her part to ensure that the event lived up to its "Mayhem" moniker.

There will be surfing competitions in four categories, the Men's Open with a total prize purse of $2,300 SGD (approximately $1,800 USD), Women's Open ($1,300 SGD), Masters ($1,300), and Bodyboard ($1,300), as well as other prizes in categories such as Best Up Coming Local and Best Wipout.

And for the second year in addition to the surfing competition will be the SlideJam Longboarding Competition, which saw tremendous success last year and is expected to draw skaters from all over Malaysia and Singapore to compete for the $1,000 RM first place prize.

The brainchild of Nazir "Ajill" Saleh of Bigfoot Industries, a surf and skate product retailer in Singapore, the Monsoon Mayhem event has continued to grow in popularity each year as a surf, skate, and music event. This is the second year the surfing competition has been sanctioned by the ASC, and it looks to be breaking records again in drawing surfers, skaters, and their fans to the beach for an exciting and fun weekend.  The registration fee for competitors is only 60 RM for the event, which also includes a Saturday night beach party.

For more information and details about the Monsoon Mayhem, how to get there from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, as well as accommodation options see the Bigfoot website at www.bigfoot-industries.com or their Facebook page Bigfoot Industries (BGFT), or just send an email to bfinternational@gmail.com.

The Monsoon Mayhem event is supported by the Malaysian State of Johor as both a tourism promotion activity and in support of the growth of surfing in Malaysia.

Monsoon Mayhem 2012 is organized by Bigfoot Industries, sanctioned by the Asian Surfing Championships with official event partners Tourism Malaysia, Tourism Johor, Pejabat Memeterian Pelancongan Negeri Johor, sponsored by UNKL347, Wavehouse Sentosa, Satu Suku Surf, Fatimah Mohsin The Wedding Gallery, SaltySkin Dive & Surf, JOHO and Journey, and supported by the Surfing Association of Singapore, Johor Surfing Association, and MRB. The official accommodation for the event is the Lotus Desaru Beach Resort.

History is Made as Asian Surfing Champions for 2011 are Crowned in Singapore

18 December 2011 – Singapore: The inaugural Asian Surfing Championships Awards were held on Saturday evening December 17th at the Wave House on Sentosa Island in Singapore to honor the Asian region’s first professional surfing champions, Singapore’s surfing champions, and to celebrate the media partnership of the ASC with the Outdoor Channel for 2012.  The event was attended by over 100 members of the Asian surfing community and various media.
It was a historical landmark in the progression of Asian surfing, as it was the first time that Asian surfing champions have been crowned as a result of competing in a multi-country and multi-event professional surfing competition circuit. The 2011 Asian Surfing Championship circuit saw a total of 9 events held in four countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Thailand.
22-year-old Made Raditya Rondi from Bali Indonesia took top honors as the champion in the Open Division, having won the Quiksilver Thailand Surf Competition in Phuket last September, the Rip Curl Surf & Music Festival in Bali in October, and just last week the Billabong Cherating Pro in Malaysia.  He is also the runner up on the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship tour for 2011.
The significance of what he had achieved was evident in his acceptance speech, as he said, “Thank you very much for this award, as this is one of the biggest honors of my life so far, and I’ll always remember this. I want to say thanks to my sponsor Billabong and the ISC and ASC crews for making this all happen, and I hope that next year surfing can grow in Asia so we can make more contests. Should be lots of fun…thank you!”
Unfortunately 2011 ASC Longboard Champion Arip Nur Hidayat from West Java Indonesia was not present to receive his award, as he was attending his brother’s wedding, but he was acknowledged in absentia with a around of applause.  Hidayat is also the 2011 Indonesian Longboard Champion.
In the Women’s Division it was Yasnyiar “Bonne” Gea from Sumatra Indonesia who received the ASC Women’s Champion award, having competed in all six women’s events and having won three of them.  She thanked her sponsor Billabong, her family, the Asian surfing community and the ASC for their support in making it possible for her to be able to surf and to win this award.  Gea is also 4-time and current Indonesian Women’s Champion.
Decha Sithidej is now Thailand’s first surfing champion, having won the Master’s Division (over 35 years of age) of the Asian Surfing Championships.  It has only been in the last several years that Thailand has been recognized as having a surfing community, and it has grown rapidly as a result.  In his acceptance speech, Sithidej was liberal in his praise of the ASC for their support of surfing in Thailand, saying “Thanks to Tipi Jabrik and Tim Hain at the ASC for helping and supporting us in Thailand, without them this wouldn’t be possible.  Also big thanks to the crew at Quiksilver Thailand and to Joob at Surfing Thailand for their dedication and support.  This award is only possible because of all of you, and I’m so proud to represent Thailand as the first surfing champion.”
After the ASC champions had been called up together on the stage for a group photo, ASC Media Director Tim Hain took the microphone and called on Mr. Kevin Sim from Multichannel Asia to receive a placard in appreciation of the ASC and Outdoor Channel agreement for 2012.  By mid 2012, the Outdoor Channel will be broadcasting a series of programs that revolve around the ASC and its events, in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, and other Asian countries.
“On behalf of Outdoor Channel, I would like to say that we’re very happy to be a partner with the first even Asian Surfing Championships, for next year and in the years to come” said Sim.  “We believe it’s the perfect platform from which to inform and entertain both the mainstream and sports enthusiasts in the Asian region, bringing the exciting sport of surfing into the living rooms of millions of people.”
After Sim’s speech and a big round of applause, MC Nazir “Ajill” Sallah from Big Foot Industries and president of the Singapore Surfing Association made a surprise declaration…the announcement of Singapore’s surfing champions for 2011.
Receiving the Singapore Women’s Champion award was Cheryl Tang, who though taken by surprise delivered a heartfelt speech when asked by MC Sallah how she felt to be Singapore’s first woman surfing champion, especially given that there is no surf in Singapore.  She replied, “I think that if there is a will there is a way.  I’m really happy to see that surfing has grown so much in Asia, especially South East Asia, and I want to see more girls surfing in the current generation and the younger generation, and thanks to the ASC and the Outdoor Channel I know that’s going to happen.  It’s been a long road but it’s a really good thing for Asian surfing."
Singapore’s Men’s Champion Nasri Banadhaj was all smiles as his name was announced, and from the podium said, “First of all I want to thank the Indonesians and the Malaysians for sharing their waves with us, as we don’t have any waves in Singapore, so thanks so much for that.  And a big thanks to my crew of friends that has been surfing with me and supporting me for so many years!
With a final thanks to the attendees and the sponsors by MC Ajill, the formal part of the evening was over and then it was time for some entertainment at the Wave House Flowrider, where ASC Men’s champ Raditya Rondi and Women’s champ Bonne Gea tried their hand at surfing a different kind of wave than what the ocean can deliver.  With a bit of coaching and hands-on help, they both succeeded in spending a few seconds on their feet in the Flowrider.  “It’s way different than surfing for sure,” said Rondi.  “I started to get the hang of it at the end and it was really fun…really different but really fun.  When you fall its crazy, because you get swept away and rolled around so different than in the ocean, but it’s all good. With a bit more practice I’m sure I can get good at this!”

Billabong's Peter Thew and Wave House's Jeff Ranta as well as several other local experts jumped in to do a little demo to the crowd and show how it was supposed to be done.  DJ music accompanied the performance and and soon the crowd was dancing to the beats...until long into the night.

The ASC Awards was held in conjunction with the B.Y.O.B (Bring Your Own Board) event that included a full day of Flowboarding, Skateboarding, Wake Surfing, Stand Up Paddling, BMX and Bodyboarding, followed by their awards presentation and a night of partying with top local bands and DJ’s.
The Asian Surfing Championship Awards was sponsored by the Wave House Sentosa, the Surfing Association of Singapore, and Bigfoot Industries with the support of the Coca-Cola ISC Tour, Billabong, Oakley, Quiksilver, and Rip Curl, and media partners Outdoor Channel, Surfersvillage.com, Lines Magazine, Baliwaves.com, Thai Surfrider Magazine, SurfTime Magazine, and Royal Video Magazine.

About Gene Kreyd:

Born in St, Petersburg Russia, Gene was exposed to and surrounded by art from birth and has studied many art forms since.  In 1973 he came to the West with his parents, first to Europe then to the U.S, where in California he discovered surfing. This became his form of "ultimate freedom", and surfing is the axis of his life revolves around and the inspiration for his creativity.

Gene first came to Indonesia in 1985 to surf Padang-Padang, and Bali has been his home base ever since. In search of waves and new ideas he travels the world, often putting himself in extreme situations to taste and capture the essence of his reality. Creating films, writing music, shooting photos, and making designs for fabrics, the mix of all these elements are manifested in his paintings.

For him multimedia is where it is at. He is into a full multi sensory experience, often using his photography as the "base layer" for his works. There are no limits to his creative expression. His intention is to inspire and awaken.

Gene Kreyd’s creed:  Live the life you love!

Billabong Family Beach Cleanup Weekend!

Congratulations to the Billabong Family for Getting Down and Dirty this Weekend to Clean Up Bali Beaches!
The whole Billabong family got down and dirty over the weekend doing beach cleanup at Jerman Beach, Tuban with the help of GUS (Gelombang Udara Segar) and some of the local people. Together they collected a large variety of plastic waste, broken glass and other trash left by visitors, locals or washed ashore by the tides.

"Jerman Beach is one of the best surfing spots in Bali, as you can see there are lots of boats here to take people surfing," stated Made Basur, Operational Manager of PT Billabong Indonesia. "But it's just not as lively as it could potentially be, because all the trash on the beach is not pleasant to look at. This beach clean up is our first step to do something about that."

Billabong collaborated with GUS to add more rubbish bins on the beach, and to make a more permanent composting site. They also added signs to remind people to throw the trash in the bin.

"It's important that everybody understand how to process trash properly," added Made Basur. "We can cleanup this beach all day but if people keep throwing trash recklessly then it's going to be dirty again tomorrow. Socializing information is important and that's what we are trying to do."

Everyone enjoyed the beach for the rest of the day and hoping we did some work that will benefit our beloved beaches.

Raditya Rondi Wins Billabong Cherating Pro 2011 - Becomes First ASC Surfing Champion

Raditya Rondi Wins Billabong Cherating Pro 2011 - Becomes First ASC Surfing Champion

12 December 2011 – Cherating, Malaysia: In an exciting finale to the Billabong Cherating Pro 2011, Indonesia's Raditya Rondi dominated both the relentlessly pounding South China Sea waves and his fellow finalists to take the Men's Open Division victory yesterday at Cherating Point in East Malaysia.  With this being the final event of the inaugural 2011 Asian Surfing Championship Tour season, Rondi also claims the title of first Asian Surfing Champion, a historic milestone in Asian surfing.

It was a battle not only against his competitors but also against the elements, as the further increase in swell from the previous day had the waves in the 3-4 foot range with a raging rip current making paddling against it all but impossible.  After catching a wave, the surfers would usually get washed half a kilometer or more in a matter of minutes, and have to paddle in to the beach and then run back up to the point to jump in again.  It was a test of strength and endurance as well as surfing ability, and after the final Rondi said jokingly, "Maybe that gave me an edge. I was the youngest guy in the finals, and maybe the most fit, so I still had some reserve power that maybe they didn't, which got me in position to get the best waves."

Always modest, Rondi played down the fact that he absolutely ripped apart his very first wave to post the highest single wave score of the day, 7 points out of a possible 10, which had the crowd on the beach cheering wildly.  He went on to add another good score halfway through the final to clinch his hold on first place and leave the runner up spot to Teiki Balian from France, third place to Tipi Jabrik from Indonesia, and fourth place to Kuo Heng Liang of Taiwan.

Rondi was clearly ecstatic about not only his win but becoming the first ASC Champion, saying "This is a really a great moment for me, to be the first ever Asian Surfing Champion, and I'll remember it forever.  Back home in Indonesia, it was Pepen Hendrik that was the first Indonesian Surfing Champion back in 2004, and now its 2011 and I'm the first ASC Champion.  I'm so stoked right now, and feel so honored."  When asked about his experience this year surfing on the ASC Tour he replied, "I've had so much fun, traveling to different parts of Asia, making new friends, seeing new places, and surfing fun waves.  I really think it's a great idea and really important to surfing.  It gets us out of our usual places and helps us improve our surfing.  I'm looking forward to next year already!"

In the Women's Division final, it was 4-time Indonesian Women's Surfing Champion Yasnyiar "Bonne" Gea who took the win in the final minutes over 13 year old Annissa Flynn from Thailand, who seemed to have the victory in hand until Gea scored big points for her now patented layback maneuver, her second of the final, which turned the win over to Gea.  Gea also claimed her spot in history today, becoming Asia's first Women's Champion.  "I'm so happy to both win today and to be the Asian Women's Champion," she said.  "I hope I can be a good example for other women to follow, so we can get more girls out surfing together."

In the Master's Division it was Aril Zainal whose local knowledge got him the best waves and the top scores, as he seemed to know just where each section was and how to hit it for maximum points.  He was clearly worn out from the effort of surfing three heats, but stoked on his victory, saying with a laugh, "I'm so tired I can barely carry my board back, and I'm so glad its over.  There is no way I could go out for another heat after this!"
The Billabong Cherating Pro 2011 was a very successful event, drawing almost 70 men and women contestants from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, the Maldives, Taiwan, France, Denmark, Australia, and Switzerland to compete for cash, products, prestige, and fun in this 3 star Asian Surfing Championship sanctioned event, the 8th and last stop on the 2011 ASC tour.

Finalists in the Men's and Women's Divisions received cash, a Nixon watch, and Von Zipper sunglasses, and the Master's finalists received product vouchers and the winner receiving a Nixon watch.

Billabong Asia's Brand Manager Peter Thew was on hand to join in the fun over the weekend, and had this to say after the awards presentation:  "It's always good times for us here at Cherating, and it was exciting to come back again this year.  This is a great grassroots event and with the ASC coming in this year there are a bunch of new countries seeing Malaysia surf for the first time.  Hopefully we can continue to grow this event but still keep it true to its grassroots core, helping to nurture and build the Malaysian surfing community.  Looking forward to coming back next year to do it again!"

The Billabong Cherating Pro 2011 was sponsored by Tourism Pahang, Satu Suku Surf, Billabong Asia, Nixon, and Von Zipper with media support from Surfersvillage.com, Lines Magazine, Thai Surfrider Magazine, SurfTime Magazine, Baliwaves.com and RVM, and sanctioned by the Asian Surfing Championship Tour.

Wet and Wild Start on Day 1 of Billabong Cherating Pro 2011 in Malaysia

Wet and Wild Start on Day 1 of Billabong Cherating Pro 2011 in Malaysia

10 December 2011 – Cherating, Malaysia:  The forecast for a new South China Sea swell to start off the Billabong Cherating Pro in Malaysia was delivered in full today , with smallish early morning conditions steadily giving way to very contestable 1 meter waves by mid day, but also bringing with it torrential rains and a brief thunder and lightning storm.

But none of this bothered the 70 men and women contestants from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, the Maldives, Taiwan, France, Denmark, Australia, and Switzerland that arrived on the beach today to  compete for cash, products, prestige, and fun in this 3 star Asian Surfing Championship sanctioned event, which is the 8th and last stop on the 2011 ASC tour.  They tackled the testing conditions head on through the entire day, without hesitation.

The Women's Division competitors were the first to take to the water and get through their first round heats, with current rankings leader Yasnyiar Gea from Indonesia posting the highest scores of the round and the last ASC event winner Annissa Flynn from Thailand sending the message that she wants to end the year on a winning note by easily winning her heat to advance into the semifinals.

Then it was the Open Men's Division getting out there and battle it out for their chance to be on the podium in tomorrow's final, with the first two rounds being run in the pouring rain with a midway break for the 20 minute thunder and lighting storm that passed through.  By the time Round 2 was completed it was high tide and 6 pm, so time to call it a day.  Tomorrow will see Round 3 action beginning the day, with current ASC Open rankings leader Raditya Rondi from Indonesia leading off in Heat 1.

It is predicted that the swell will to continue to increase slightly for the completion of the event tomorrow, which will see winners crowned in the Men's Open, Women's, and Masters Divisions.  The contestants were all told to be on standby at the beach at 7:30 am for a possible 8:00 am start.

Billabong and the Asian Surfing Championship brings this popular event to a global audience with promotions throughout the Southeast Asia region and daily media releases on the Billabong Asia website and on the ASC Tour website. The Billabong Cherating Pro is a strong supporter of Cherating and the surrounding area, and provides employment, tourism, and support to the local community.

In recent years the profile of Malaysian surf has been growing, due both to the annual competitive events and also to the number of international surfing magazines and notables invited to the region by Satusuku Surf in order to increase awareness of the region within the international surfing community.

The Billabong Cherating Pro 2011 is sponsored by Tourism Pahang, Satusuku Surf, Billabong Asia, Nixon, and Von Zipper with media support from Surfersvillage.com, Lines Magazine, Thai Surfrider Magazine, SurfTime Magazine, Baliwaves.com and RVM, and sanctioned by the Asian Surfing Championship Tour.

KERAMAS, Bali/Indonesia (Friday, 7 October, 2011) - The Oakley World Pro Junior Bali resumed at Keramas today in clean 3 – 4 foot (1.5 – 2 meters) surf. The call was made to finish the Men’s Round 3, performance levels and fun surf came to the party making today a great day of competition.

Darmaputra Tonjo (IND) the Bali local from Legian has added another scalp to his collection, after taking down ASP World Junior number 2 Nat Young (USA) earlier in the event, he’s now eliminated Jack Freestone (AUS) reigning ASP World Junior Champion. The heat of the day was as close as they come, but Freestone was was behind the 8-ball from the first minute after Tonjo scored a 7.33 (out of a possible 10) on his opening ride. Freestone landed some massive airs, but fell short of the scores required and the Bali local will progress to the next round.

“I’m so happy!” Tonjo told the interpreter. “I cannot believe that I beat the number 1 and 2! Getting that good score early gave me the momentum and I’m still cannot believe it.”
Freestone showed the mark of a true Champion, being gracious in defeat and giving praise to his competitor.

”I’m disappointed, I had the waves to win, but it didn’t happen,” Freestone said. “It was a good heat, exciting to be in. Tonjo has been a standout in this competition and I wouldn’t be surprised if he caused a few more upsets, he’s the one to look at right now.”

Davey Cathels (AUS) survived a nail-biter of a heat against South African Michael February (ZAF). Cathels only caught two waves during the 30 minute heat, the first wave and the last wave of the heat, but did enough to edge out his competitor and advance to Round 4.
“I surfed just before the heat and there was a few sets,” Cathels said. “So my plan was to wait for the good ones, but after my first wave nothing else came. I was sitting there thinking, am I only going to catch one wave in this heat? With two minutes to go I started freaking out and realised I had to change my game plan. I caught a nice little insider and got the score.”

Beyrick De Vries (ZAF) and Thomas Woods (AUS) put on an epic show in their Round 3 clash, with long tubes and big airs being thrown down by both surfers. The lead changed multiple times, but it was De Vries who held the top spot when the final siren sounded, sending Woods, the 2011 ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series Champion home with an equal 17th place finish.
“I know Thomas (Woods) can do massive air-reverses whenever he wants, luckily I got two of the best waves of my trip so far and was able to beat him,” De Vries said. “Thomas got his best wave because of my mistake, but I got a second chance and got barrelled.”

Marco Fernandez (BRA) had an arm wrestle of a heat against Japanese competitor Arashi Kato (JPN). Both surfers were going big in the punchy surf, throwing down some massive turns, but it was the Brazilian who came up with the win.

“I saw Arashi (Kato) surf yesterday and he was surfing really well so I knew I had to step up,”Fernandez said. “I’m really happy to make it through to the next round.”
Eziekel Lau (HAW) took out an action packed heat over fellow Hawaiian Keanu Asing (HAW). The Hawaiians went all out in their Round 3 battle and although they’re great friends they didn’t hold anything back. Asing had the lead momentarily with the highest single wave score of the heat an 8.67, but Lau over took him with his pair of 8.00s.

“I wanted to make sure I got the first wave and show my power,” Lau said. “It was barrelling but it was kind of hard to find them because it was small. Keanu (Asing) and I are staying right next to each other, we just acted like it was just another day. But I knew it was going to be a gnarly heat because we surf against each other all the time at home.”

Ryan Callinan (AUS) put on the performance of the day, belting the lip and launching into the sky to notch the highest heat total of the day, 16.67 (out of a possible 10). In Round 4 Callinan will face today’s other standout surfer Caio Ibelli (BRA), who coincidentally also scored 16.67 in his Round 3 heat today.

“There’s not many goofy-footers left,” Callinan said. “Which is a bonus for me because it gives the judges something different to look at. The conditions are kind of tough, but this is really similar to my home break, so my backhand is one of my strong points.”

A call will be made at 12 noon tomorrow back at Canggu for a possible 12:30 start to Men’s Round 4 or Women’s Round 3.

The Oakley World Pro Junior Bali will run from October 3 – 14. Watch the LIVE webcast at www.oakleyprojunior.com

KERAMAS DELIVERS AGAIN ON DAY 4 OF THE OAKLEY WORLD PRO JUNIOR

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Oakley World Pro Junior
Stop No. 1
2011 ASP World Junior Tour
Keramas, Bali, Indonesia
October 3-14, 2011

KERAMAS, Bali/Indonesia (Thursday, October 6, 2011) –The Oakley World Pro Junior Bali returned to Keramas river mouth for Day 4 of competition. The surf was crisp, clean and 3 - 4 foot (1.5 - 2 meter), the ideal canvass for the world's best junior surfers to display their full repertoire with tubes, walls and air sections on offer.

Garrett Parkes (AUS) won an early morning all Australian battle against Oakley’s Matt Banting (AUS) thanks to a couple of clean tube rides and fin throws. Banting put up a strong fight, but Parkes put his experience to good useselecting the best waves of the heat to advance through to the next round.

"It doesn't feel like an international competition yet, I've only surfed against Aussies," Parkes said. "It's a bit of a bummer that we came up against each other, but that's competing. We just tried to go out there and have a good heat. I was kind of freaking at the end, he only needed a 7 (out of a possible 10) when a nice wave came through. He didn't catch it, which was lucky because he could have gotten the score on that for sure."

BrazilianIan Gouveia also had to battle one of his fellow countrymen, Gustavo Machado. Both surfers struggled to find the best take off position, but Gouveia claimed the heat after scoring a deep barrel, muscling is way out after the wave closed out.

"The waves were pretty slow and it was hard to find a good one," Gouveia said. "The sets were fun though, this is my first time to Bali and I'm loving it."

Medi Veminardi from Reunion Island bounced back from his Round 1 loss yesterday where he suffered the biggest wipeout of the day, going over the falls on a solid 6 foot wave. Veminardi scored a nice tube ride to advance to Round 3, sending South African Slade Prestwich (ZAF) home with an equal 33rd place finish.

"It's very difficult on your backhand out there," Veminardi said. "Normally I surf good on my backhand, but I'm not here. A lot of the goofy footers are struggling out here, like how we saw Nat Young (USA) lose yesterday. This wave, with this swell direction means you just need to race on your backside, but I can't complain, you just have to deal with what you've got."

Tanner Hendrickson (HAW) is quickly establishing himself as a darkhorse at this year's Oakley World Pro Junior. A few minutes into his Round 2 heat, Hendrickson threw himself at a huge ramp, launched into a big air-reverse, landed clean and was awarded a 7.67.

"I knew it was a good wave so I just went for it," Hendrickson said. "I saw that section and it was steep and perfect for an air, I'm stoked I made it. I was just having fun and free-surfing by the end of the heat, but I went for an air on a stupid section right at the end and I think I might have broken my toe, it hurts so bad."

Oakley’s own Thomas Woods (AUS) showed his competitive nerves of steele after his heat was tied at 11.60 each with fellow Oakley teammate Keala Naihe (HAW) with a minute and a half to go. Had the heat finished in a tie Naihe would have taken the win as he had a higher single wave score in his tally. But Woods didn't let it come down to that, he took off in the last minute, attacked the lip, pulled into a little tube and finished with a closeout re-entry to rocket himself to 1st place.

"I was so nervous when he got that 7.5 he needed," Woods said. "I was like this can't be happening. Then there was 30 seconds to go and I had priority and I saw a little runner and I did my best and even put out a claim. You feel like a kook doing a claim, but you gotta do it when stuff like that happens."

Kaishu Tanaka (JPN) was the standout performer of the day, unleashing power turns right in the steep pocket of the wave. Tanaka scored two excellent rides an 8.00 and a 7.67 in the opening minutes of the heat, leaving Brazilian Joao Abreu (BRA) chasing scores that never eventuated.

Fellow Japanese surfer Arashi Kato closed out the day with another heat win for the Oakley team against Chase Wilson (USA). The contest went right into heat one of the third round only to get called for the day when neither Davey Cathels (AUS) nor Michael February (ZAF) had caught a wave 10 minutes into the heat.

The contest will resume tomorrow, October 6, at Keramas with a 5:30 am call.

The Oakley World Pro Junior Bali runs from October 3 - 14. Check out www.oakleyprojunior.com for the live webcast, latest news, photos, videos and more.
