Oakley Pro 2012 at Canggu Bali Kicks off with First Two Rounds Completed – Dede Suryana Boosts 360 Air for Top Score of the Day

Oakley Pro 2012 at Canggu Bali Kicks off with First Two Rounds Completed – Dede Suryana Boosts 360 Air for Top Score of the Day

1 April 2012, Canggu-Bali:  West Java's Dede Suryana wasn't doing any April Fooling today as he punctuated his Round 2 heat win by posting the day's top single wave score of 9.25 (out of a possible 10 points) with an impressive 360 aerial, and coming back to the beach with the day's top total heat score of 17.00 (out of a possible 20) points.

"The waves were so fun out there," said Suryana after his heat.  "The wind was coming up a bit side shore so it gave me chance to hit that ramp and give it try.  I'm glad the judges liked it!  Looking forward to tomorrow so I can get some more great waves as I hear the swell is supposed to be getting bigger."  Tomorrow Suryana will be matched up against two-time Coca-Cola ISC champ Lee Wilson, Made "Bol" Adi Putra, and Yudi Andika in Heat 7 of Round 3.

The Oakley Pro 2012 is the first stop of the 2012 Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship tour season, and is a dual sanctioned event with the Asian Surfing Championship Tour.  Canggu is one of the most popular and high performance waves on the island of Bali, with many of the world's best surfers regularly visiting for photo and video shoots, and just to enjoy the Bali vibe and superb waves on offer.

Another highlight from the day was goofy footer Husain Areef from the Maldives winning both his Round 1 and Round 2 heats to secure a spot in Round 3, where he will take on current Coca-Cola ISC champion Marlon Gerber, Mustofa Jeksen, and Kadek Murtika in Heat 1.

"I'm surprised but very happy to have gotten through my heats, "said Areef.  "There are so many good surfers here and most of them from Bali, so I really didn't know if I could make it through.  I've only ever surfed the wave here for the last two days, so I don't have much experience. I'm so happy I made it through so I can surf again tomorrow."  Arref came to Bali with his brother Abdulla, who unfortunately didn't make it through his first heat, coming in third place.

The waves conditions were good to excellent during the day, with consistent and glassy 3 foot (1 meter) surf for the 7:30 am start, then becoming a little wind affected from about 10:30 until the end of Round 2 at 1:30 pm.  The swell forecasters are predicting a steady increase in swell over the next several days, so it is possible that the event will be able to finish during the first week of the two week waiting period that ends on April 14th.

But it wasn't just about surfing today at Canggu Beach, as today representatives from Oakley Indonesia, Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, the Coca-Cola ISC, the Role Foundation, and the Pererenan and Canggu Surf Clubs joined together in a tree planting project as part of the on-going efforts of the Coca-Cola ISC, Oakley and the Role Foundation to reduce the carbon footprint of CC-ISC events and improve the ecosystems of Indonesia's beaches.

30 trees were planted at various locations around the beach, directed by the heads of the local surf clubs and spearheaded by the Role Foundation.  It is hoped that projects such as these will set an example to other companies and institutions in Bali and other parts of Indonesia and encourage them to take action in preserving the environment.  For more information check out www.rolefoundation.org.

The Oakley Pro 2012 will continue tomorrow morning with a 7:30 am start of Round 3, with more exciting action as the top seeds of the Coca-Cola ISC Tour take on the surfers that advanced from Rounds 1 and 2 today, so you'll be seeing Indonesia's best surfers going mental as they start on their mission to be the next Coca-Cola ISC champion.
To stay on top of all the action going down at the Oakley Pro 2012, check out www.isctour.com for video's, photos and more, and on Facebook look up Indonesian Surfing Championship (ISC).

The Oakley Pro 2012 presented by San Miguel Light is a 6-star dual sanctioned Coca-Cola ISC and ASC event, and is sponsored/supported by PowerAde, New Era, Cocoon, the Beat, and Indosurflife.com.

The Coca-Cola ISC Tour is sponsored by Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, with media support by Surfersvillage.com, Baliwaves.com, Balibelly.com, Lines Magazine, SurfTime Magazine, Magic Wave, Alam TV Bali, the Outdoor Channel, and RVM.

Rip Curl SEA GromSearch Series Opens in perfect waves at Pantai Srau - Pacitan, Java, Indonesia

Press release for immediate release;

Rip Curl SEA GromSearch Series Opens in perfect waves at Pantai Srau - Pacitan
, East Java, Indonesia

English version

6 February 2012, Kuta-Bali: Idyllic Pantai Srau provided the perfect setting for Sunday's opening event of the 2012 Rip Curl South East Asia GromSearch series, with frothing grommets from all over Java coming to compete for fun, prizes, and the coveted "Ticket to Bali" in the excellent 2-3 foot waves breaking in crystal clear water.

Just 45 minutes from the beachside town of Pacitan, the boyhood home of Indonesia's current president Susulo Bambang Yudhoyono, Pantai Srau proved to be a perfect fit for a GromSearch event, with a day filled with fun, games, beach cleaning and education in addition to the serious competitive surfing side.
In the Under 16 Division the stakes were especially high, as the top two finalists would be receiving an all expense paid trip to Bali to compete in the GromSearch South East Asian Final, which will take place at Kuta Beach during the annual Rip Curl Surf and Music Festival on October 20-21.

Of the 17 groms from Cilacap, Pangandaran, Pacitan, and Batu Karas who valiantly battled it out for the Ticket to Bali on Sunday, it was 14-year-old Dian Hardiyanto from Pangadaran who came out on top. In the 20 minute final went to work early, catching the first wave and constantly prowling the lineup looking for scoring opportunities, then punctuating his intentions with a high scoring combination of turns and an aerial to finish off just a minute before the final horn.  Runner up Suprianto from Pacitan was more selective, his local knowledge seeing him choosing the best waves and getting in some great maneuvers, but he ran out of time against the busy Dian.
When asked how he felt about his win Dian replied, "I'm very proud to be the winner today.  The waves were great and it was fun to surf this place, and I'm lucky I won over Supri, who is the local here."  Last year Dian won a GromSearch event at his home break of Batu Karas, so is a repeat winner.

"Yes I have been a GromSearch winner before," said Dian, "three other times I think, but I've never won the Final in Bali yet. I really want to be the overall champion this year and go to Australia, so I'm going to practice lots so I can win in Kuta."  Looks like he is getting the year started right, so let's see if he can make his dream come true in October. All the finalists received Rip Curl GromSearch trophies, Rip Curl gear, Skullcandy headphones, and Shapers accessories such as grips and leashes.

In the Under 14/Micro Grom Division, there were four little groms with big brave hearts that paddled out to take on the waves, all from Pacitan. All made it safely to the outside for the start of the heat, but shouts from the beach had them all scrambling as a big set was spotted. All but 8-year-old Raka, who turned towards the beach and started paddling! The crowd on the beach gasped as they watched him get tumbled over the falls and held under for a few seconds.  But when he came up he shook it right off and got back on his board and started paddling, but this time to the inside where he nabbed a couple foamies that got him a 3rd place trophy and a goody bag full of Rip Curl, Skullcandy and Shapers loot.

This Rip Curl Grom Search in Pacitan was held in cooperation with the Pacitan Surf Club and combined with the PSC's annual Hidden Point Surf Competition, with the event being officially opened and blessed by Vice Regent Prayitno.  As the representative for the Regent, he spoke about the Regent's dedication and support of surfing and hoped that it would continue to grow and bring more tourists to visit this beautiful place.
The Hidden Point Open Division competition was highly contested by the 16 surfers from Pacitan, Batu Karas, Pangadaran, Cilacap, Jogjakarta, and Carita, but in the end it was Sapri from Batu Karas that took top honors over Latif from Carita and Didin Flores from Pangandaran.  They all went home with very cool "Kris" trophies, cash and great Rip Curl, Skullcandy, and Shapers goodies.

The day's activities included an educational program designed by the Bali-based environmental group GUS where the kids were given brochures and told about the importance of keeping their beaches and homes clean and properly disposing of their trash.  A beach cleaning game followed, with prizes for the three that collected the most and best quality trash.

Several live bands played mostly reggae style music during this memorable day at the beach, creating a chilled out and relaxed atmosphere for the spectators that had come so far. To make sure they went home completely happy, a special highlight after the awards presentation was the Samalona band taking to the stage with Heru, the lead singer from the popular Jojga band Shaggy Dog, mixing things up with some high-energy tunes to complete a perfect day at Srau Beach.  The other bands included Poli Ponic from Ponogoro, Wake Up Tomorrow from Jogja, and Bron Is from Wonogiri.

The next stop on the 2012 Rip Curl GromSearch SEA tour will be world famous Lakey Peak in Sumbawa on the 22nd of April, a surf destination that has already produced some of Indonesia's finest young surfers including Rip Curl team riders Oney Anwar and Andre Anwar.

Follow along with Rip Curl as they continue to Search the planet for the hottest boy and girl groms!

Taipei, Taiwan (February 22, 2012)Quiksilver, the world's leading surf wear and boardriding company, is proud to announce the signing of a 3 year contract with 12 year old junior surf champion Rory Macdonald from Taiwan.
Born and raised in Taiwan's southern town of Kenting, Rory was introduced to surfing by his father at the age of 3. His surfing talent and trilingual language abilities (Mandarin, Taiwanese & English) quickly established him as the grommet to watch on the island. Competing in local contests since the age of 6, he is a well known face around the resort town. "I like surfing in Kenting; the waves are different every time but I still surf it no matter what. It's all good practice," Rory said.
Since 2010, Rory has won 8 championships including 4 titles in Junior Short Board and 4 titles in Men's Short Board divisions; becoming one of the most accomplished young surfers in Taiwan. His recent performances at the 2011 Quiksilver ASC Taitung County International Surf Challenge and the 2012 Riyuewan Open in Hainan, China, also proved his tremendous potential to the international surfing community.
"Having followed Rory's progress over the last few years it is fantastic to now welcome him to the Quiksilver family. Rory rips and is blessed with a heap of natural talent. There is no doubt that he will be a big part of the surfing future of Taiwan", said Quiksilver Taiwan's General Manager Clayton Wholley.
As part of his sponsorship agreement, Rory will travel overseas to numerous international contests this year – the first being the Asian Surfing Championship sanctioned Oakley Pro 2012, to be held at Canggu in Bali this April.
When asked how he felt about joining Quiksilver, Rory said "I'd be stoked to be able to become a pro surfer, and cannot wait to travel and surf around the world…. I want to keep challenging myself and improving."
Tipi Jabrik, the President Director of the ASC said, "Rory is one of Taiwan's biggest hopes for the sport, as he's got both talent and personality, so he will be a great asset for Quiksilver."

Raditya Rondi Wins 6th Annual Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge in Malaysia

Raditya Rondi Wins 6th Annual Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge in Malaysia

9 January 2012, Desaru - Malaysia:  Current Asian Surfing Champion Raditya Rondi from Indonesia took the Men's Open victory yesterday in the 6th annual Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge at Desaru Beach in Malaysia, battling it out in a 25 minute challenge against Mohd Nazrin "Super Yen" from Malaysia, Abdullah Areef from the Maldives, and Gilang from Indonesia.

The surfing conditions on the final day lived up to the moniker of "mayhem" for the most part, with 3-4 foot waves closing out on the inside sandbars and rain squalls blowing in and out, but for the Men's Open finals the conditions cleaned up and allowed thrilling finale to the three-day Monsoon Mayhem competition.

Rondi was all smiles back on the beach after the final, pleased to be starting the 2012 ASC tour season with a win.  "This is my first time coming here to Desaru and it's been lots of fun, so to take the win today just caps it off.  It's a great way to start off the year.  We were really lucky that conditions got better in the finals, with the wind all but stopping so it got pretty good, which made it easier to find a couple of nice waves.   It was also cool to see all the Malaysian crew again, as I really enjoy surfing with these guys here and the whole experience," he said.

When asked about the significance of his win today Rondi replied, "Yes it's great to win the first event of the season, but there are a lot of good surfers on the ASC tour now and there will be lots more events, so I'll have to work hard and travel if I want to retain my title in 2012.  But I'm going to do my best, and this is a great start!"

Abdullah Areef from the Maldives was satisfied with his third place finish, saying "I'm glad I got into the finals, so I can go back home with a trophy.  The waves got much cleaner for the final, which made for a great ending.  I've really enjoyed the event, and I want to do a lot more ASC events this year for sure, that's my plan for 2012."

The Asian Surfing Championship tour is just starting its second season, after having sanctioned a total of 9 events held in four countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Thailand in 2011.  The Monsoon Mayhem is the first event of 2012 season.

The Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge took place on the golden sands of Desaru Beach, located an hours drive east of Johor Baru and approximately 1.5 hours by car from Singapore.

During the three days of the event, the surfing action included the Men's Open Division, Women's Division, Masters (over 35 years of age) Division, and a Bodyboard Division, with over 80 participants coming from Australia, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, the Maldives, Singapore, and of course Malaysia.

In addition to the surfing, there was also a skateboarding Slide Jam competition held on a hill just behind the Lotus Desaru Beach Resort followed by a DJ party at the hotel, giving the attendees a full weekend of fun activities.

To close the event at the awards presentation on the beach on Sunday afternoon, the Director of the Malaysia Tourism Ministry in Johor, Mr. Mohamad Isa Bin Abdul Halim took to the podium and said, "I first want to thank all the surfers from around the world that came to participate in the event, and all the governmental agencies that came together to support it to make it happen.  We really hope that next year you all will come back again, as we hope to make an even bigger and better event for you.  So thanks again everyone, and have a safe journey back to your home countries.  See you again next year!"

Nazir "Ajill" Salleh from Bigfoot Industries was very pleased with how the event all came together, saying, "We're very happy with the great turnout this year, and next year we plan to make it even bigger and better, hopefully with more prize money for the contestants.  It's been gratifying to see the event grow from just a couple of small tents on the beach and a dozen surfers, to having the ASC come and help us run the event and draw dozens of surfers from other countries.  We had over 80 contestants from 7 countries here this year, and I'm sure next year we'll top that.  We feel honored that they all came to our event, as this isn't exactly a dream wave that everybody is frothing to surf, so it's the spirit and stoke of surfing and competing that is so good to see. So I thank all the surfers, my Bigfoot team, the government and the sponsors, and the ASC for making it such a great event."
